Project Based Learning (PBL)
Since I'm not spending entire class periods lecturing, how can I find and incorporate new activities and lessons that will relate to what my kids should be learning?
PBL is a common practice now in our classroom. Weekly, we try to have at least one activity that is project based. The main goal of PBL is to try to stay away from the common projects such as posters, PowerPoints, and presentations. We hope to create projects students can relate to their everyday lives, or in the case of our Social Studies classes, current issues. We conduct debates, discussions, mock trials, seminars, and use sources such as Pinterest. Students find project work more meaningful if they conduct real inquiry.
Tips on PBL
1. Allowing choices is critical
2. Rule of 3- 3 students per group
3. Become a coach
4. Provide Feedback: Student to Student and Teacher to Student/Group
5. Rubrics, Need-to-Know list of concepts and terms, Group Contracts
